Lisbon in winter: the best activities
Whether you live in an apartment or a student residence in Lisbon, pauses in study for exams are always a good idea, especially if they are done outside the home. And if you are in the capital – and in one of the most coveted cities in Europe – you really need to start enjoying the best of the city. We prepared for you 7 activities to do in Lisbon this winter. Prepare the paper and pen to point them out.
1. Christmas markets in winter in Lisbon
Winter in Portugal revolves around the festive season of Christmas. The city is always very well decorated and the interior of the houses in Lisbon is no different. If you don’t know what to do in Lisbon this winter, there are a series of Christmas fairs that you will love to visit. You can buy all the typical foods of the season, which are not normally found during the rest of the year, handmade toys, jewelry and creative craft items that you can offer this Christmas.
2. Explore the Museums
If you have not yet visited one of the many incredible museums in Lisbon, this is a great opportunity to do so. Due to the reduced flow of tourists during the winter season, museums will be very calm and quiet, with few or no lines to enter.
Look for the National Museum of Ancient Art, the Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro Museum, the Fado Museum, the MAAT of Belém and the National Tile Museum. All of them have free entry some days of the week and special prices for students.
3. Meet the LX Factory
Visit LX Factory and enjoy one of the best terraces in Lisbon. There is no other place more peculiar in the city than the LX Factory. Right at the base of the 25 de Abril bridge, it is a place where vintage meets technology and where the “abandoned” finds modernization. Walking around the industrial complex is like walking inside an art museum.
Take the opportunity to drink a hot chocolate at the Landeau and to enjoy the rest of the day on one of the loungers at Livraria Ler Devagar. You will love this place!
4. Visit the churches of Lisbon
The churches in Lisbon are coming to life and you don’t need to be religious to make your visit truly interesting.
Lisbon has some of the most beautiful churches in the world. Jerónimos Monastery, São Roque Church and Carmo Convent, are just some of the churches that you will love to visit this winter in Lisbon.
5. One night of Fado
Nothing in Lisbon warms the soul like a moving fado performance. Schedule a different night and book a dinner table in one of Lisbon’s cozy fado houses. There are many in Alfama and Bairro Alto.
Alternatively, you can also book a ticket for a more formal Fado experience in Chiado, in the city center.
6. Shopping at Feira da Ladra
Feira da Ladra is the oldest fair in Lisbon and takes place every Tuesday and every Saturday of the year, without exception. During the winter, you have two opportunities a week to enjoy this special event. You will find a little bit of everything there and it may be a good place to buy cheap and original Christmas gifts.
7. New Year’s Eve
If you are living in Lisbon, you really have to take the opportunity to enter the new year in the city. New Year’s Eve in the capital is an unforgettable experience. There are fireworks that you can watch at one of the city’s many viewpoints. True shows that you will certainly not soon forget.
Lisbon has a lot to offer you besides the University and a diploma. Enjoy one of the most beautiful cities in the world. 🙂
